Dana is a bit of a mess. She feels ignored by her husband, a man she really married to "fit into life" in the first place, her son has moved out and she has random binges into alcoholic puddles.
Her neighbor, also fond of the bottle, is found dead and apparently Dana was the last person seen near her. Of course, after waking up with a wicked hangover, she remembers only bits and pieces of something that made her even unhappier than before.
The book describes the downward spiraling of a woman already unhappy in her place in life and fearing that it's about to become much worse.
Not so much a "Whodonit" as a "DidIdoit?"
