ago, Rhiannon disappeared without a trace. Apparently, now she's living
in a mothers-only community called Halycon in middle-of-nowhere
Arizona. When Lenna gets a call from Rhiannon out of the blue with an
exclusive invitation to Halycon, Lenna decides to go (new baby in-tow)

Lenna starts second-guessing her plan. Plus, she has to contend with

Definitely an "outside the box" story. This story has a
full house of quirky - and rather frightening - characters. Toby is a
completely different type of MC, you're never quiet sure if he's vacant
eye candy or someone with very high intelligence. He certainly has
enough "locked doors" in his mind to keep you wondering what goes on
behind those eyes!

July 2024

#Atriabooks #netgalley #noroadhome #johnfram

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-30437221786647948442024-01-18T11:39:00.000-05:002024-01-18T11:39:10.920-05:00Summers at The Saint - Mary Kay Andrews

Welcome to the St. Cecelia, a landmark hotel on the coast of Georgia,
where traditions run deep and scandals run even deeper. . . .

Everyone
refers to the St. Cecelia as “the Saint.” If you grew up coming here,
you were “a Saint.” If you came from the wrong side of the river, you
were “an Ain’t.” Traci Eddings was one of those outsiders whose family
wasn’t rich enough or connected enough to vacation here. But she could
work here. One fateful summer she did, and married the boss’s son. Now,
she’s the widowed owner of the hotel, determined to see it return to its
glory days, even as staff shortages and financial troubles threaten to
ruin it. Plus, her greedy and unscrupulous brother-in-law wants to make
sure she fails. Enlisting a motley crew of recently hired summer
help—including the daughter of her estranged best friend—Traci has one
summer season to turn it around. But new information about a long-ago
drowning at the hotel threatens to come to light, and the tragic death
of one of their own brings Traci to the brink of despair.

Traci
Eddings has her back against the pink-painted wall of this beloved
institution. And it will take all the wits and guts she has to see
wrongs put to right, to see guilty parties put in their place, and maybe
even to find a new romance along the way. Told with Mary Kay Andrew’s
warmth, humor, knack for twists, and eye for delicious detail about
human nature, Summers at the Saint is a beach read with depth and heart.

I was a bit gobsmacked when I saw the size of this book upon receiving it, as publishing houses generally steer away from publishing stories this size unless the author is a top selling author (King, Maas, etc.) I have read that Sara's Wilderness Series has been a big hit for readers, and all of those books seem to be quite sizeable also.

Though I do not have any statement set in stone about this, I believe this book to be a loose continuation of Sara's Wilderness Series, which already has 6 books. I say this because there is a preface in the ARC I was given that states that those familiar with the Wilderness series may realize there are some character name changes. Saying this, nowhere am I told I should read the series before taking on this hearty sized tome.

This novel is filled with details about everything from racial tension to railroad travel. There is a gentle, underlying humor to her writing and I easily became invested in the story from almost the first page and forgot to be intimidated by the size of the book.

Berkley, April 2024

________________________________________

A young midwife travels
west to the New Mexico Territory to care for women in need and faces
dangers more harrowing than the ones she’s fleeing in this epic tale of
survival, redemption, and love from Sara Donati, the international
bestselling author of the Wilderness series.

1857:
In a bid to outrun her past, Carrie Ballentyne accepts a nursing
position with a doctor in the New Mexico Territory. She knows the
journey from New York to Santa Fe will not be easy, but she relishes the
adventure. However, nothing could have prepared her for the wilderness
she encounters. Its vastness and power are awe-inspiring, stunning in
both beauty and brutality. To endure, she must learn to rely on her
fellow travelers—and one enigmatic man in particular. As the small,
tight-knit group tackles challenge after challenge, she feels her heart
opening to this rugged land—and the people willing to risk so much for
one another.

The trip west is only the beginning of Carrie’s
challenges, though. In Santa Fe, she compassionately and respectfully
helps women bring new life into the world, making her beloved among new
mothers. Soon, however, she realizes that her employer and his wife are
keeping secrets from her, and she must ferret out the truth to protect
their young daughter. But to save the little girl she’s come to cherish,
Carrie will have to confront the demons in her own past—a feat that
will take all of her bravery with the help of the man she’s grown to
love and depend on above all others.

With its vivid descriptions of the breathtaking western landscape and its irresistible characters, The Sweet Blue Distance is the unforgettable story of one woman’s courage to heal herself, her family, and the women entrusted to her care.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-91200210359870705842023-12-21T14:12:00.002-05:002023-12-21T14:13:02.353-05:00Mary Kay Andrews Christmas Books - Bright Lights, Big Christmas is the newest!

We all love @marykayandrews

starters, I do love the cover, nice and clean but grabs the eye. I
enjoyed this novel quite a bit. Fast paced, with no sections that drag
you down with an overly slow build up. The author did draw out the meal
descriptions a bit, but instead of becoming bored with it, I became
hungry so I have to give props there. It's a nice escapist read with no
emotional tugs.

Everyone has a story. But not everyone's story is true.

When
a young woman vanishes from her remote Greek islands estate, her best
friend races to find her, using clues found in the explosive manuscript
she left behind…

Gia and Abby have been friends since childhood,
forever bonded by the tragedy that unfolded in Greece when they were
eighteen. Now thirty, heiress Gia is back in Greece with her shiny new
husband, entertaining glamorous guests with champagne under the hot
Mediterranean sun, while bookish Abby is working fourteen-hour-days as
an attorney. When Gia invites Abby on an all-expenses-paid trip to
Sweden to celebrate her birthday, Abby’s thrilled to reconnect.

But
the day of her flight, Abby receives an ominous email that threatens to
unearth the skeletons of her past, and when she and Gia’s brother Benny
arrive in Sweden, Gia isn’t there. Worried, Abby and Benny fly to
Greece, where they find Gia’s beachfront estate eerily deserted, the
sole clue to her whereabouts the manuscript she penned, detailing the
events leading up to her disappearance. Gia’s narrative reveals the dark
truth about her provocative new marriage and the dirty secrets of their
seductive guests, a story almost too scandalous to be believed. But the
pages end abruptly, leaving more questions than answers.

How much of Gia’s story is true? Where is she now? And will Abby find her before it’s too late?

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-45308949371620309382023-11-09T08:17:00.003-05:002023-11-09T08:17:55.551-05:00Current Reads for Thanksgiving Week!

Current book love on my coffee table...
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When I was a young pup I adored romance novels. Read them by the handful. Then life got in the way and I felt they were way too sappy for the reality of living. This was a good thing for me as it opened up my reading to a whole new level and now I read just about anything.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">As a reviewer I get to pick and choose what I read. I traditionally turn down graphic violence, stalker books, fantasy........and romance. I just wasn't into it anymore and it is somewhat hard to review a romance book at times - they all have happy endings with solved problems.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">But then I was offered a chance to review a Jude Deveraux book. At the time I didn't realize she was still writing. She was my all time, go to favorite romance author. Her characters were usually humorous, spunky and sassy without too much angst and gnashing of teeth. Great escapism that you could somewhat chuckle through.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So I said yes I would do the review. Wow. I forgot how much I enjoyed her. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Then I was offered another new Jude book to review. Suddenly I had a full blown desire to read Jude again. Luckily most of her books are at used book stores so they're easy to pick up and won't cost a fortune as she <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">is prolific.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Then I had another idea - why don't I at least give a thumbs up or thumbs down to each book since I'm tearing through them all. So that's what I'll do here. It will be a simple list of titles and what I thought of them.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Maybe it will encourage you to pick up some of her novels if you haven't already. Truly she is a master of the romance. The covers are generally <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">awful, but just open to the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">story and you'll be fine.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I found that most of the time I liked the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">men best - they are <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">generally <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">always nearly perfect<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">, warm and <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">understanding in <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">every way but t<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">he women almost always need<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">ed attitude adjustments<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I didn't actually understand how some of the<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">m <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">could even interes<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">t these per<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">fect men.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Scent of Jasmine - One of my Favorites, a lot of fun banter

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">High Tide - Meh

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Change of Heart - Loved the first half, lost interest in 2nd half (really 2 stories)

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Sweet Lair - Will that girl calm down already, one of her more angsty characters, hard to figure out why the guy liked her.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Eternity - very cute and fun

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Just Curious - a fun short story. Enjoyable.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A Knight in Shining Armor - one of her most popular, but damn, doesn't that girl ever stop crying?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A Season in the Highlands - Short story anthology, I loved hers - straight fun.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Someone to Love - Quite good.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Holly - One of her sexier ones, sex everywhere, anytime, from beginning of the book, fun read.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Temptation - Set it Scotland, nuff said. I quite enjoyed it.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Duchess - another good one, though the girl was ridiculously young and naive to attract a worldly man.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> The Awakening - ridiculous. She went from insanely timid and mousy to a tiger. Too much of an attitude change too quick

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Twin of Fire - Very much enjoyed. Lot of spunkiness

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Twin of Ice - Also enjoyed very much, perhaps more than Twin of Fire.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Ever After - A good read, lot of tension with enough humor to offset it.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Girl from Summer Hill - A fun read that bogged down during the overly long Play re-enactment.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Invitation - <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">3 short stories. When Willow Stone finds these words written on the floor of her
deceased son’s bedroom, she’s perplexed. She’s never heard of it before,
but soon learns it’s a tiny island off Wisconsin’s Door County
peninsula, 200 miles from Willow’s home. Why would her son write this on his floor? Determined to find answers, Willow sets out for the island.

After a few days on Clifford, Willow realizes: This place is not
normal. Everyone seems to be stuck in a particular day in 1994: They
wear outdated clothing, avoid modern technology, and, perhaps most
mystifyingly, watch the OJ Simpson car chase every evening. When she
asks questions, people are evasive, but she learns one thing: Close your
curtains at night.

High schooler Lily Becker has lived on
Clifford her entire life, and she is sick of the island’s twisted
mythology and adhering to the rules. She’s been to the mainland, and
everyone is normal there, so why is Clifford so weird? Lily is
determined to prove that the islanders’ beliefs are a sham. But are
they?

Five weeks after Willow arrives on the island, she
disappears. Willow’s brother, Harper, comes to Clifford searching for
his sister, and when he learns the truth—that this island is far more
sinister than anyone could have imagined—he is determined to blow the
whole thing open.

If he can get out alive....

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-10733867592999096452023-07-14T10:04:00.004-04:002023-07-14T10:04:30.518-04:00Lovelight Farm Series - B.K. I've had a few snippy comments that I'm reviewing older books. :( #netgalley #berkley #intheweeds #bkborison

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-55755641348130692922023-06-27T09:18:00.003-04:002023-07-13T09:29:23.879-04:00The Seven Year Slip, Ashley Poston

Have you ever
been so interested in a story that if you wake up in the middle of the

beautifully written story of what could be. The publicist described it
to me as a rom-com and I don't agree with that at all. More of a story
of chance meetings and finally realizing what you want out of life.
This will be out for sale June 27th and I highly recommend it.

Written by the author of The Dead Romantics. What I was relieved to find was that this novel is quite a bit different from The Passage series. Sometimes authors fall into a popular style/topic and remain there. Not here though. At first, when I read the description, I joked that it was Logan's Run but better, but it turned out to be so much more.

I do have to admit that there were a few murky chapters where you just needed to read them through without trying to analyze what was actually going on, but as with many sci-fi novels, if you can create new worlds in your mind, this is prone to happen at times.

No worries though, it all clarifies in the end. A nice chunky novel to immerse yourself into another world for a while.

#netgalley #theferryman #ballantine #randomhousepublishing #justincronin

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-9343132165494797882022-04-14T12:28:00.000-04:002022-04-14T12:28:20.338-04:00Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews

Summer never truly begins until Mary Kay sends her newest beach book out into the world. Kavanaugh went to work restoring homes for Kavanaugh & Son
Restorations at eighteen, married the boss’s son at twenty, and became a
widow at twenty-five. Now, she’s passionate about her work, but that’s
the only passion in her life. “Never love something that can’t love you
back,” is advice her father-in-law gives her, but Hattie doesn’t follow
it and falls head-over-heels for a money pit of a house. She’s
determined to make it work, but disaster after disaster occurs, and
Hattie’s dream might cost Kavanaugh & Son their livelihood. Hattie
needs money, and fast.

When a slick Hollywood producer shows up
in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia, she gets a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity: star in a beach house renovation reality show called The Homewreckers,
cast against a male lead who may be a love interest, or may be the
ultimate antagonist. Soon, there’s more at stake than bad pipes and dry
rot: during the demolition, evidence comes to light that points to the
mysterious disappearance of a young wife and mother years before.

With
a burned out detective investigating the case, an arsonist on the
loose, two men playing with her emotions, and layers upon layers of
vintage wallpaper causing havoc, it's a question of who will flip, who
will flop, and if Hattie will ever get her happily-ever-after.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-4926018986374520822022-02-06T11:44:00.002-05:002022-02-06T11:44:16.082-05:00Maggie Moves On - Lucy Score

I've been a big fan of Lucy Score for several years now and always grab her books when they come out. I tend to buy the physical copies of the ones I enjoyed the most and have 11 so far. This book will definitely be #12 when it publishes.

Lucy has a way of creating the most likable/lovable characters, even the grumpy ones make you chuckle. My husband says he can always tell when I'm reading a Lucy book because I'm almost always smiling. Makes it hard to sneak in any reading at work.

Without giving away any of the plot, let's just say that this book is about creating a wonderful family without even knowing you really needed or wanted one. There's the usual sexual tension, angst-y moments, light humor and HEA that one finds in an enjoyable romantic read. A good way to while away an afternoon by the pool or beach.

PS - By sweet, I mean the story - there's definitely sexy times in there!

Publication Date: August 10

#Berkley Publishers #waitforit #jennmckinlay

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14521838.post-611407798355443162021-06-20T14:59:00.006-04:002021-06-28T09:06:35.528-04:00All Together Now by Matthew Norman

And what lovely item just showed up in my mail.....
